The Challenge

Redesign HealthifyMe to be user-friendly, intuitive, motivating, and to acquire more users.

User Research

User research involved conducting interviews and analyzing user insights to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the HealthifyMe app, as well as other health and wellness mobile applications.

 

The primary target audience identified for HealthifyMe consists of Indian users, particularly millennials aged 25 to 45, with the premium customer base falling between 35 and 45 years old. For the interviews, users were classified into three categories: existing HealthifyMe app users, users of similar fitness apps, and individuals who do not currently use any mobile fitness platforms.

Designing the Solution
Ideation: Sketches, Information Architecture, and Wireframes 

Initial sketches and wireframes focused on simply redesigning the layout of HealthifyMe’s screens, attempting to make them neater, less cluttered, and to allow the user to complete their tasks efficiently and quickly.

Some of my first sketches included:

These sketches were used to inspire the initial wireframes of the HealthifyMe redesign and were the first to be presented to the stakeholder. Wireframes ranged from simply making small, incremental changes, to making bigger, disruptive changes to the app’s layout. The following wireframes ascend in the amount of change implemented from left to right, with the original homepage of the HealthifyMe app presented on the end.

However, the stakeholder rejected all three of the wireframes. As this project was a case study, and the changes would not be implemented on the real app’s interface, he suggested I change more than simply the layout and look of the application. Instead, I was guided to reinvent how the app works, in a way that makes it as user-friendly and as efficient as possible.

Ignoring current technological constraints, I thought of a concept in which the app simply takes a photo, and conducts a comprehensive health scan for the user, making the process as simple and intuitive as possible, wherein the app essentially does the work for you. Accordingly, simply taking a photo of your food allows you to track your calorie intake, filming your workout allows you to track your fitness level and movements, and so on.

As such, I formulated the information architecture to reflect the new, updated version of the application.

Visual Design: Exploration and Conceptualisation

This stage of the project involved implementing design and stylistic choices onto the app's wireframe to create a cohesive and visually appealing app design. While some designs involved simply implementing a specific UX design style, colour palette, and font style, other designs were more conceptual, with an idea transforming the entire look and feel of the app’s interface, creating a new brand and story for HealthifyMe.  

Design 1: Neomorphism

This design creates a very fresh and minimalistic visual experience, reducing the users’ cognitive load. However, neomorphism raises several accessibility concerns for users and creates spacing issues in terms  of its design.

Design 2: Dark UI Design

Darker tones are highlighted with brighter, accent colours to express sophistication and elegance, conveying a futuristic feel while maintaining a minimalistic display. This design improves visual ergonomics and focuses the user’s attention, but at the risk of appearing too premium.

Design 3: Fun & Playful

This concept relies on making your ‘healthification’ a joyful and amusing process. We tried incite a childlike excitement in our users, showing them that fitness doesn’t have to disrupt your life. This was carried out through the use of bright colours, bold display fonts, and vibrant illustrations.

Design 4: Fresh & Free

This conceptual design was inspired by the fact that health and fitness is strongly associated with neutrals, citrus fruits and colour schemes, and an overall image of refresh and renew. Therefore, this app concept captured that with bright and light backgrounds minimalistic design, and an ‘unbounded’ design.

Design 5: Futuristic

This design was inspired by city lights and light trails at night, creating a reflective, shiny, and glassy display. Brighter, neon colours were used against dark backgrounds to create this effect, thus leaning into the futuristic changes of the new HealthifyMe app.

Design 6: Calm & Relaxing

Several associate health with balance and well-being, and an overall sense of tranquility. Therefore, we try to capture this with lighter, subtler tones to create a relaxing, almost spa-like visual experience.

Finalising the Design

The stakeholder finally chose Design 3 as their final choice for the new HealthifyMe app. This design reinvents the meaning of fitness, pushing the boundaries of what a fitness app should look like, introducing a completely new and unconventional concept and design to the fitness app landscape.

The user testing affirmed our thoughts behind the design and concept, further finding the app easy to navigate, easy to input information, and fairly self-explanatory. 

As a result of the new features introduced in the app's redesign, additional assistance would be needed on the development side when publishing the app, potentially using AI in order to bring these features to life. While the technology may be pushing the boundaries, it is certainly not impossible, given the substantial advancements constantly being made in artificial intelligence technology.  

Thus, here, we present to you that fitness doesn't have to be tedious, strenuous hard work, and can instead be fun and exciting, wherein you can actually enjoy the process of toning up and getting fit!
